You often, more than most, collaborate with other writers. How does that work?

Sometimes it works well, and sometimes it doesn’t. It works best, I think, when one writer has an idea or a beginning that they don’t know what to do with, and another writer sees a way of moving it forward. It can fail when one writer has a vision of what the whole story should be but can’t communicate that to the other writer.

The most fun story I ever collaborated on was written with Michael Swanwick, Pat Murphy, and Andy Duncan, and we sketched the story out in advance, leaving room for surprises. In fact, we made surprises mandatory. Or maybe the most fun story was the one I wrote with Rudy Rucker in which, at the end, the two main characters fucked the entire Earth alive. Or maybe it was the one I wrote with Swanwick with the evil elves and the monster that turned into Dick Cheney. Or the one with Leslie What about the high school for psychic teenagers and the criminally insane.

I would never have written any of those stories if left to my own devices.
